they die. its like cutting off someone leg. and you bleed quicker in water.
steve is probably spinning in his grave that people are doing that to an animal he wanted to protect, or for any animal for that matter. its not respecting his memory or revenge, its disrespecting his memory and murder.

Well I am not an expert in the field, but I would say they would die that is why they are getting washed up on beaches. I have heard people on the radio saying if you ever catch one while fishing the first thing you should do is cut off its tail so the barb cant pierce your body. I have to say though a friend and I caught one probably a year ago and he was just really careful and stood on the tail [with shoes on] pulled the hook out of its mouth and released it back into the wild. Steves mates have made a public plea for people to stop killing stringrays as it not what Steve would have wanted, it was a very sad accident that took his life. but always remember he has a legacy that will live on firstly in this family and their love of wildlife as well as all his conservation operations. R.I.P STEVE WE WILL ALL MISS YOU.

They do not die.
Many aquariums that keep rays in touch tanks trim the barbs on their rays.
They must do this periodically since they do grow back.
However you can remove an elephant's tusk without killing it, but that's not what poachers do because it is time and care intensive--a surgical procedure.
Similalry, any "revenge" on rays, is not to remove their barbs and keep them alive, its real motivation is to torture the rays, so they likely are not surviving the removal of their barbs, but NOT because it is not possible.
Hold on, you said tails.
Without their tails they will not swim as well, and they will likely end up bleeding to near death, or with subsequent infections that will kill them.
It's like amputating the limb of a human.
They can survive, but can also die as a result.

I don't think they can swim properly. And Steve Irwin's foundation has asked people to quit doing this.

Unfortunately they will die..this is craziness! It is not the sting rays fault about Steve. Not to sound harsh, but, Steve had been playing with fire for years and one of these days he was to get burned and he did..he knew the consequences

I read that too and felt sad that we who are supposed to be the smart ones act this way. The people doing this are nincompoops, well, piece of poop at least. Why harm those poor animals?

In aquariums, they mostly only cut off the stinger. In aquariums, they cut off the stingers so you can "pet and touch" them without getting stung. It doesn't hurt the stingray at all.
