I think, obviously "they will do something". But what?

Dude, how could the US be surpassed? You answered your own question, because the current level cannot be maintained.

Nobody is answering my questions here, so let me give you a little more of a hint. Something along the lines of say...the recent research into making tactical nuclear weapons...

China has a standing army of 1 billion members. I think they win.

I know their navy sucks and they can't fly either, but ICBMs and an huge army can win a lot of wars.

Have you been drinkin'? Your question makes no sense.

UPDATE _ OK surpassed - I doubt it, unless pacifers come back into power. The nuclear threat from the rest of the world is going to grow, but not reach the height it did during cold war. A rouge bomb here or there, but not an arsenal. I doubt anyone else will challege our military power with a ability to deploy troops and weapons throughout the globe as we can. We should watch China, of course, and they are gonna go after Tiawan eventually and that may bring us to at least rattle our sabors together. Russia? I doubt it. We are the only great power in the world that really wants to be a great military power and pay the price. So, relax. For now. Thanks for the e-mail

We have the most powerful military because we have the highest GNP and are willing to spend a large chunk of our government revenue on defense.

Eventually, the Chinese will overtake us in terms of GNP (Purchasing power parity - the actual worth adjusted for exchange rate - and then in real dollar terms). If they decide to match government spending on military in percentage terms, they will overtake us.

Can we stop it? It's possible but highly unlikely. The current forecasts suggest China's economy will overtake us in the mid-21st century. India will take the bronze medal.

In the 19th century, the British empire was the envy of the world. America started her ascendancy at the end of the 19th century in economic terms. We have maintained economic and military since the conclusion of World War II in 1945. Exactly how long it'll last, I cannot predict.

It depends on what you mean by "superiority."

It is obvious that we can never match China man for man militarily. Technology will have to be the determining factor.

It was once said that the nuclear arms race was silly, because when two men are standing in a gas tank, the one with a single match is as strong as the one with a box of matches.

Makes sense to me.
Unfortunately, it apparently makes sense to Iran, too.

Dude, the U.S. spends more on its military than all other countries COMBINED. How could it possibly be surpassed?

More likely, the U.S. will go bankrupt (debt's almost up to $10,000,000,000,000) due to overspending on the military.

Ohhhh you mean like oh...I dunno, fake terrorist attacks in order to scare people shitless and get bigger military budgets and permission to start any war they want just by using the "terrorist attacks" as an excuse? Something drastic and immoral like that you mean?
