If I am going to offer ad space on my website (CPM etc), what is the best way or normal way to accept payment?

If I am going to sell ad space and I don't want to go through an ad agency where they choose the ads, ie I want to send notices out to potential advertisers, how do I accept their payments? What is the normal way for advertisers to pay for an advertisement on a website? Maybe other than paypal

Checks or credit cards (merchant account if you don't want to use Paypal).
