I am not a doctor so I can't say that I am an expert on this but I will tell you what I know...

I had a freind who lost a family member when they were younger and the fact that he stayed in the organized sports (even groups...not just sports) seemed to be a good therapy. Being surrounded by freinds and teammates gave him an escape, even if just for a little while.

I wouldn't say that sports alone is going to be enough so if he needs to talk to someone make sure he gets that help too.

most people would say "tell him you are sorry", but in my opinion that is the last thing you should say. many people, including me, hate when others say that to them. do you have any idea how many times that gets said to some one when something bad happens? Sine you don't really know him, I'd go with something along the lines of "life's not fair, but i think you deserved better".

Tell him you feel for his loss, and if there is anything you can do to help him in anyway, you would be more then happy to. You might give him a man hug also, he could probably use one.

In your own words, try to encourage him to stay in his current activities. Tell him that you are there for him any time he need's to talk. If you choose to, support his idea of changing sports.

You can talk to him, hug him and pray with him.
