No way... If they win a single match, let alone make it past group stages, I will be shocked and amazed, because according to wikipedia, in World cup 06 qualifying, they were in group 2, with Ghana, Congo DR, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, and Uganda. South Africa tied for second with Congo DR, the group winner advancing, which was, of course, Ghana. In each of the matches against Ghana, South Africa failed score a single goal, losing 0-3 in Ghana, and 0-2 in Johannesburg. Against Congo DR, with whom they tied for second place, they lost the away fixture 0-1, and drew the home fixture 2-2. If you cannot win either of these mediocre teams, then how are you going to beat the likes of say, England, Mexico, or even Serbia & Montenegro (last place in 2006 Fifa World Cup finals)? South Africa is not a world class team, and I don't even know why FIFA chose them to host the cup.

A teams play seems to rise dramatically when on home soil for the WC, not unlike the Olympics. Witness for example France getting their only star in 1998

Uh do you want an honest answer, let me be polite. For the sake of their fans i am sure that they will battle each match of the group stage and not go through to the knockout stages. The fans can always that they tried. To be honest i hope they are put in a easy group, hmmmm, it still wouldnt help them in any way. But hey we could get Burundi, Ghana, and Iran in the same group as them then maybe they could be what second after Iran. Other than that i dont see them getting any further than the group stages, they will be spectators just like the rest of us that dont qualify. lucky for them they qualify automatically, imagine hosting and not even making it into the group stages?!!!!

Of course! Home advantage is huge! They just missed out qualifying in '06 after making it in '02. They have good players. Don't worry. Just pary FIFA wakes up and opens up the game...soccer is too low scoring and has too much diving now.

No, physically they're OK, but their game is still naive. Watch out in 2014
