What is best anime soundtrack out there?
I am a big Yoko Kanno fan. I think her best work was in 1985's "Macross Plus", but her recent work in "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" is also amazing.
Also worth noting are Hajime Mizoguchi's score for "Jin-Roh" and Joe Hisaishi's recent work for Studio Ghibli.

all the aforesaid soundtracks are notably outstanding
but my-all-time-favourite would be the one done by late Ritsuko Okazaki in "Fruits Basket"

I like J-pop and J-rock my favourite soundtrack happens to be Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex as well! The song Inner Universe was so awesome! Though I really love the songs by Gackt too in FF Dirge of Cerberus.

I think that the FullMetal Alchemist soundtrack was really good, especially "Rewrite." There is also a song called "Brother" that plays throughout the series that is amazing.
Noir also has a great soundtrack...music is linked to the memories of Kiraka and Mirelle. That watch that played music still gives me chills.
Also, you can't deny Neon Genesis Evangelion's "Thesis of a Cruel Angel" is one of the most distinctive anime songs ever!

A Cruel Angel's Thesis, Angel Attack and Rei I and II..ooh Fly Me to the Moon and Asuka Strikes!!
Somebody mentioned FFX..I don't consider the Final Fantasy games anime *even though the FMV* look like anime. If that were the case, Id say FFVII..but Evengelion is great

I really do Like Haruka Kanata By Ancient Kung Fu Generation. But High and Mighty Color definately rocks too man. I love them

I've always loved the opening song to Escaflowne: Yakusoku wa iranai (i don't need promises). The melody perfectly captures the feel of the series, and it's my favorite 'feel good' track. ;-)

for me its sen no kotoba(1000 words) from FFX-2., and suteki da ne from FFX ... .
