it is similar to BMI for adults it is a way of telling you if your baby is a healthy weight and also if they are growing properly
babys should stay roughly in the same percentile they were born into and should not go below the 5th or above the 95th percentile or risk major health problems
"The growth charts show us the statistical distribution of weight, height , etc. in a particular set of babies (or children or adults). So if a baby is in the 50th percentile for weight on the CDC charts, it means that half of the babies of the same age in the US are heavier and half are lighter; if a baby is in the 10th percentile for height, then 90% of babies of the same age in the US are taller and 10% are shorter. What doctors are generally looking for on a growth chart is that baby stay relatively consistent in their growth pattern"

If your baby is in the 75th percentile for weight, it means 74 babies out of every 100 weigh less than your baby and 24 weigh more.
Good doctors are putting less and less stock in it...it's much more important to look for signs of good nutrition such as clear skin and eyes, good response, etc.

It is a scale of other babies the same age. If your baby is in the 50th percentle that is average as the number gets lower (30th percentile) your baby weighs that much less than the average baby and vice versa. So if your baby is in the 90th percentile=bigger baby than average
10th percentile=smaller baby than average
Hope that helps

In a room full of 100 kids you babies exact age the percentile is like... (example my son is in the 25th percentile that means in a lineup of 100 kids he is the 25th shortest or lowest weight for his age) I hope that makes sense. the doctor had to explain it to me.

It is how the pediatrician "rates" your baby after weighing them. If he tells you the baby is in the 90th percentile, that means the baby weighs more than 90% of all the other "rated" babies, they basically do this from birth to make sure the baby is gaining some weight and growing. It does'nt mean (the % they give you) he/she will stay in that "group" consistently tho. Please don't get too concerned with this, don't worry about the numbers!!!

i.e if your baby is in the 65th percentile, that means 65% of babies are at or below your babies weight for that age.

It is the percent compared to the average of other babies the same age. Although most people dont know that they only have this scale for formula fed babies. Scary Huh?
