Rather than "original" I'd suggest "useful." Make a collection of indigenous tree leaves. You'll amaze your friends forever more that you actually know the names of the trees. ;-) Make the key to your collection well and the teacher will be pleased.

Another idea would be photographs of birds or spiders. Have you noticed how many "what is this spider" questions scroll past here on Yahoo?

Well, you did not mention at what level class work it is, for school or for college?

For school, I would try to collect insects and small bugs. Few trip to a nature preserve will provide you a large collection of samples rather quickly.

Be sure to use bug spray, and watch out for the snakes, though most garden variety of them are harmless.

If you live near an ocean, Evening walks by the bay will refresh you and will supply with a variety of shells etc.
