lets see: min. of 80 crunches on one area of your abs per day, eating chicken vs. beef-lower in fat conctent- make wiser choices in what you eat, drink, etc. eat pastas for carbs if you will work out a lot. try working out 5-6 days a week, also do swimming-that incorporates a lot of your ab muscles and gives you the 6 pack you want(my 10 yr. brother does swimming and he has great abs but he does the swim team thing all year long~!)drink lots of water-replace it as your main drink vs. sodas and limit your intake of Powerade or Gatorade! do reg. crunches on the mat, on a ball, reverse crunches-now those are killers!top when doing crunches: do them slowly but not too slow so that you can feel the burn=you are doing them right. cur down on the sugars, have a buddy help you with other ab exercises!

You can do all the situps in the world, and you may never see your abs. Seeing a six pack is the result of a body fat LOWER than around 10-12%. In other words, getting to around 12% body fat, you might start to see your abs.
So, lose body fat by exercising and eating right. Not eating to lose weight is horrible and you will have a HARD time losing those last few pounds starving yourself. Your body will hang on to fat for dear life if you go that route. You need to lose approximately 1-2 pounds a week through proper diet and CARDIO.
It's tough, but I read a hundred REAL articles on the subject before I started my program. It's working, but I still can't see my abs yet. I've lost a ton of weight in the past 2 years (about 60 pounds). I started out walking 2 miles @ 4 mph. This was burning calories but was not truly "cardio". When you exercise at your target heart rate for 20 minutes straight, your body will start to convert fat to energy. Doing cardio as opposed to just burning calories burns calories for a longer period of time AFTER you're through working out.
The side effect of "cutting" or losing weight is that your body will undoubtedly convert SOME amount of muscle into energy as well. I'm not sure it's possible to build muscle and cut at the same time, as you'll see tons of articles debating this. THAT SAID, the other part of your exercise needs to be weight lifting. To the extent you are able to add muscle to your frame, you'll burn more calories while your body is at rest. I think it's something like 50 extra calories a day for every pound of muscle you add. Again, hard to do if you're doing a lot of cardio, but is good for maintaining strength in any case.
Hope this helps. You can pick any diet you want to, low carb, vegan (with protein supplements, please), but the key is to burn more calories than you put in your mouth on a day-to-day basis. Rule of thumb is to create about a 500 calorie defecit daily, which would equate to around losing a pound a week.
If you have a body type that was like mine, which is destined to become fat without taking action, it takes longer. But it is possible. I think in another 6 months I could easily have a six pack, but I tend to fall off the wagon as far as what I eat every now and then and I'm just as happy just being trim. Up to you.

Men's Health: The Abs Diet is a great book with wonderful programs. What I like is that they have gym exersices on one page and on the other page they show you a "home" version. And for women there is The Abs Diet: For Women.
I lost 22 pounds in two months.

Ab roller is really good, pretty cheap. But if you have a bit of a gut, you will also have to lose some fat by dieting. Cut your calories, cut your fat intake.
