Iran began violating the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by disallowing IAEA inspectors from reviewing some sites. This was the same pattern engaged in by Libya when they were secretly working on nuclear weapons. Bush caught Libya in the act and Libyan's leader, Khaddafi, handed over the weapons production materails. Iran has been a bit more stubborn... well, the warning signs are there.

Iran's Prez has made it clear to his Hezbollah and other elite forces the goal is to start Armageddon so the Mahdi can come into power. But he tells the morons in the Western press that it's for 'peaceful' purposes and they just parrot him.

Problems:
1. Breaching the IAEA treay by failing to provide full disclosure of their nuclear program. U-enrichment is permited but needs to be declared and is subject to IAEA inspection.
2. Supporting Hezubllah in defiance of Security Council Resolution 1559 calling for its militia to be disarmed.
and most importantly..
3. Irritating the neo-cons in the Bush administration.

What will happen?
Hard to say. Thanks to the Iraqi quagmire trapping US forces, Iran is not that afraid of US military action. My guess is one of the following possibilities:
1. Iran agrees to suspend Uranium enrichment in return for security guarantees from the US. They may ask for some easing of the trade embargo.
2. The US refuses direct negotiations and the Iranians hold firm. The UN Security council passes token sanctions (some travel bans, etc.) but not anything heavy due to Chinese/Russian opposition.

BTW, some people are irritated that former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami was allowed to visit the US. I say it was a good idea because:
1. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
2. Khatami was a reformist who tried to create a moderate government with more democratic norms. He lost in the power struggle, but did try.
3. He has accepted Israel as a fait accompli. It seems so obvious to us, but it's a big deal in Iran.
4. Ayatollah Khameni (Iran's supreme leader) has condemned him for his speech in the US. If they're pissed off at him, he's probably doing something right.

According to the latest IAEA the reports of weapons grade enrichment are an exaggeration. This is the same tactic used in Iraq, as well as Libya. The threat of smaller nations has been exaggerated for over 50 years now. Ex. Panama, Nicaragua, Cuba etc. Why is it always weaker countries that are contrived to be the biggest threat. That is the real question
