I have a concrete basement/family room floor which I need to cover. I am considering covering it with concrete paint and a large, room sized rug versus laying carpet tiles. I don't want any laminate or wall to wall carpet. Any thoughts?

I always use a concrete stain because it doesn't peel off and you can get some wonderful finishes with it..tortoise shell, jade, onyx or just a beautiful color to match your decor. The wear and washability is excellent..you can't go wrong with staining it instead of painting. It is not too expensive and you get a great looking floor.

If it's concrete, then it should be a grey color. Buy a brick colored paint. Pour paint into a tray. Use a large rectangular sponge and dip just the base of the sponge into the brick paint. Dab the sponge on newspaper to remove excess and then use the sponge to "stamp" rectangles on the floor in a pattern that would appear like bricks. When dry, paint floor with a non yellowing lacquer.

Cheapest would be indoor outdoor carpet, from HD or Lowes, better would be tile. Acceptable would be paint designed for that purpose and then area rugs you find suitable. Hopefully the concrete is in good condition, and you have no leaks.

Buy some of that epoxy for garage floors and do a decorative paint scheme. I like the idea of a large area rug on a nicely painted floor.

First of all make sure you have no leaks in your basement at all.If no leaks, make sure floor is clean and dry.And prime it with oil based primer, and wait about two days, and finish coat with the new latex finish paint.Because they don't make oil based finish coat anymore.By paint from Duron or Sherwilliams Paint store.Or if they don't have those paint stores, in your home area, buy a good brand from your local paint store.Good luck

Your way is fashionable now in Oz..also tape the cement into tile size sections first before painting..it looks exactly like tiles and is easier to keep clean..
