First of, to all of the un-educated answers above mine. Communism is more of an ecomnomic government, much like Capitolism describes America. In esscence the reason that America isn't a dictatorship is because the constitution was written to avoid too much power in one persons hands. Hence the checks and balances systems. It has been brought up in congrese many times that america does away with the Elctoral college and move to a direct vote. The EC was set up in the begining when technology was insufficaint and americains hardly knew who was running for president. Men were chosen to vote on behave of what they felt their state wanted. Imagine in the early 1900's that you lived on a farm in the middle of no were Ohio, The press is slow and out dated and news comes about 3 months behind, How do you know who the better canidate is? The Electoral college counted popular votes, then voted based on those numbers. A dictatorship would help in many ways yes, but you cannot deny the fact that the human eliment make it a wrong choice. One person speaking for a country and doing as he pleases is dangerous. many people think that aside for Hitlers insashable hate for the Jews he did a good job, and he did. He completely industrialized Germany, however if it were democracy the country wouldn't have been reduced to rumble later by the alie forces. Hitler would have never been able to make his camps and killing machines if there were checks and balances in order. in short there is no Perfect government, you cannot remove the human eliment, however Democracy is a better way to control humans urges to be all powerfull and wealthy.

Yeah, until your freedoms to do ANYTHING are taken away from you. Then all of a sudden the problems you have now would pale in comparison. Dictatorships always turn out bad because nobody can not make mistakes. At least with what we have now, Bush would have to get some sort of approval to use nukes or build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. Trust me we are far better off with this form. If we would just start voting some better people into office and not just the "two" we are given we would be in better shape.

Some dictatorships have functioned and developed efficiently. Singapore under Lee Kuan Yew's 3 decade tenure is a good example. But what if you do not have a benevolent dictator? Life will be pretty miserable without the ability to voice dissent at your miserable situation.
"Power Corrupts and Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely" - Lord Acton (British)
Author of Animal Farm - George Orwell (btw, his novel "1984" presents some good arguements about the dangers of dictatorship)

Something you have to realize is that in the country, the president has very limited powers. What matters most to what happens in our day-to-day life is what kind of leaders we have on a local level, so it is here that our vote makes a lot of difference. Democracy is imperfect, but it is a hell of a lot better than dictatorship. Term limits on the presidential level limit the damage one man can do. The president is also constrained by congress and the courts. As much as many people hate Bush today, there were a lot of people who hated Bill Clinton. A whole bunch of people hated and mocked Ronald Reagan on a daily basis throughout his presidency, although the perspective of history has shown him to be one of the great ones. Also, your argument that dictatorship is good for the economy does not hold water. Look at North Korea. Look at dictatorships in Africa. Dictatorship is good for the dictator's personal economy. It is not necessarily good for the people.

The philosophical concept of Communism, as proposed by Karly Marx as an economical answer to the tsarist regime that controlled Russia at the time of writing the Communist Manifesto is indeed an admirable idea. Imagine a society in which everyone works toward the betterment of the community with no thought given to personal gain or enrichment.
It is a wonderful ideal. Unfortunately, all political ideas are wonderful only in the ideal state of a vacuum of a philosopher's dream; and I include the concept of Democracy in this criticism as well.
What you speak of is not a Communistic State, however, but rather that of a benificent Monarchy; a dictatorship that would work with an enlightened view of what the people need. Such a dictatorship would work only toward the best interest of the people and a new "Golden Age" would develop as the society developed free education, free healthcare, freedom of expression, while at the same time being mature enough to recognize the social controls necessary to ensure each member of the society could enjoy the benefits without fear from any other member of the society.
It sounds wonderful. Unfortunately, no society is willing to do what is necessary to ensure that its members behave in a mature manner. No society is willing to do what is necessary to ensure that the threats against such a utopian society would not surface and threaten the harmony of the society. Also, no society is free of the power-hungry meglomaniacs who continuously mess up every political creation in order to serve their own interests or to line their own pockets with the wealth of the society.
Communism and Socialism fell to the corrupt powers that led them. The USSR was led by a corrup politburo who filled their own bellies while their people starved; hardly the ideal of Communism that Marx advocated. China is still controlled by a power-hungry and paranoid political force that is anything but the ideal of "communist" thought. Cuba is lead by a maniacal egomaniac who thinks his own opinion is the only one worth anything, and thus his people and his country suffer while he and his favorites grew rich and fat; and now he dies of the disease of the rich. Every communist and socialist power has fallen to corruption.
Now, we watch as the democratic ideal, the ideal of political power based on the will of the people, is being corrupted and torn apart by the power-hungry egomaniacs that would destroy your freedoms under the guise of fear while they fill their bellies and line their pockets. The ideal of democracy is a great one. This ideal was set forth in the Constitution of the United States; one of the greatest political documents ever written. And yet, even though this document guarantees that the power of our country rests with "We The People," we have allowed the rich, the power-mad, the religious zealots, the bigots and the big business madmen to take control of OUR country and turn it into a mockery of what democracy stands for.
You want a better country? You want a better political system? Then get off your *** and start using your Constitutionally guaranteed rights to start fighting for one. Take back America and restore it to the ideal that our forefathers dreamt of.
[I realize that America is not perfect. I know that this country has a horrible history of racism, genocidal acts against the indigenous peoples of this beautiful continent, and a warlike attitude that at times seems unmatched in the world. However, I truly believe in the ideals that were set forth in the Constitution and I believe that we can reclaim this great country from the horrible gluttons of power that have taken it from us. Never give up, and never stop being involved. Good luck to us all.]

You mix dictatorship with communism, but in a way dictatorship and communism are the same :both are evil and they forbid any individual rights to freedom and wealth , they literally steal your life, both make the citizens the slaves of a centralized government , they abuse their rights to life and happiness , dictatorship is a torturing system who make people live in a purgatory place waiting for their death to come , you should be informed that in this system people cannot utter a word they are constantly under the threat of death if they dont follow the orders given to them by their dictator example Stalin and Saddam , it is a way of letting them stay poor and under control, the same with communism which forbid them to live and possess anything , everything is sanctioned including food, the government owns everything and the people are the slaves ,, The whole planet got rid of communism because it is a slavery system which enrich the government but dictators still exist and it is our obligation to remove them because we cant allow them ethically speaking to exist and let them torture other human beings by staying blind to their sufferings,, it looks that you are too isolated from the real world to know what are true communist and dictatorial regimes because no one in his complete mind would even propose them as a way of life

communism does not work,
the only thing in Cuba that I am sure works better than the US system is health care, which is one of the most important thing a nation needs to have
"The Cuban government operates a national health system and assumes full fiscal and administrative responsibility for the health care of its citizens. Historically, Cuba has long ranked high in numbers of medical personnel and has made significant contributions to World Health since the 19th Century. According to World Health Organization statistics, life expectancy and infant mortality rates in Cuba have been comparable to Western industrialized countries since such information was first gathered in 1957."
other than that USA system is fine but ask yourself
Do presidents, vice presidents, senators, policy makers, politicians have to be involved with large companies?
Halliburton
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halliburton
I think they are deeply involved and first comes the corporation and money, 2nd is the citizen.
USA is great, but people are starting to question

Have you ever heard of Hitler or Stalin? Do you know how many millions they killed? No one has any rights in a dictatorship. You can be hauled off and murdered just because the dictator says so. All of our constitutional rights would be gone. You need to study civics and history if you do not understand why such a form of government is totally despicable.

I'm going to run for dictator. I always thought that would be a good idea, as long as I get to be the dictator. I would not trust ANYONE else with the job. To many evil dictators in the past you know?

unfortunately, not one person can be trusted with the lively hood of a country. they become too corrupt. while this is true with all governments, you are stuck with a dictator for the rest of his life. communism is perfect in theory, but when applied to real life, it always fails to greed of the leaders. Democracy works because it keeps checks on the leaders so their greed can only take them so far.
