Evening casual, in this case, will probably mean dressing up-but not to a "t" so to speak. I would suggest looking at these sites (sorry, I haven't figured out how to insert hyperlinks).

These are just some ideas:

Evening casual is the happy medium that is not blue jeans, and not black tie lol! . Khaki's and a golf shirt would be suitable for a man, while a woman's attire would be maybe a nice dress, or maybe a nice pant suit. A little more than "day" make up for her woudn't hurt a bit either. You might could get away with a shirt and tie too.

Smart man to check these things out.

The previous suggestions to you for the khakis and either an open collar (no tie) shirt or a polo type shirt are good choices.

Your wife can choose a skirt or slacks and a pretty top. I think I would opt for some softer material slacks so she wouldn't have to worry about going up and down ladders on board.

Both need to wear flat sole shoes... on a boat you will need good footing. Also, the owner won't appreciate high heel marks on his deck.

Hope you have a grand time!!

Your point about cultural ignorance is well made. Much of the interpretation problem with the Bible comes from judging what is written by the standards of today. The "large fish" (original concept) turned into a whale of a story (sorry for the pun, but I couldn't resist) as a result of over-simplification and an attempt on the part of teachers to put the story into understandable terms. Unfortunately, many people look to their religious teachers and take what they say as the "gospel truth", ignoring the reality in the scriptures. The bats are birds concept is again, in my opinion, one of interpretation of other people's interpretations (over simplifications). In that regard, the criticism is justified, but those defending their religious honor and pride never bother to check why the criticism exists. They presume an arrogance to _know_ that their point of view is the only valid one (even if it is erroneous). But... Not all criticism is honest, which is why those being criticized for their interpretation are often so defensive. Some is an attack built upon misinformation that has been created to sew the seeds of confusion. With respect to the Bible (or, as the case may be, particular Bible passages), often the criticism ignores the setting, judging matters only upon 21st century standards. Their arguments are often only intended to sway (seduce) people to their way of thinking. Not that I blame them, either. The religiously faithful often use the same techniques to seduce people to their way of thinking, too. Edit Add: I consider it unfortunate that religious teachers continue to express interpretations that are less than accurate, which is why the criticism exists. if they would learn, it would lessen the honest criticism of their misinformation and make the mockery that does exist all the more apparent.

Lines in fashion are blurred. But evening casual means relaxed easy dressing with evening accents to dress it up. You could wear nice blue jeans but with a sexy blouse not a t-shirt. You would choose a cute heel or dressy shoe instead of sneakers and of course top it off with a cute evening bag not your big day time tote bag. Of course kick the makeup up a notch with smokey eyes or a red lip too.

It means nice khakis and a polo shirt for men and nice looking jeans or slacks with a blouse or Tshirt for the women. Nothing ripped or dirty looking. You want to be casual but presentable.
