The Brother's Johnson, Strawberry Letter 22 is a cover of a classic Shuggie Otis song. The Brother's version was far more popular. It is a great song.
Toots & the Maytals, I've got Dreams to Remember is a cover of the Otis Redding song. Both versions are awesome. Toots did an entire album of Blues cuts with reggae feel called Toots in Memphis.
Sublime, 54-46 Was My Number is a cover of an awesome Toots and Maytals song. Sublime did a number of great covers including Rivers of Babylon.
The Clash, Police and Theives is a cover of a Junior Murvin song. I like the Clash version better than the original!
Massive Attack, Blue Steel is one of the oddest and coolest covers I've heard. Blue Steel is a classic Public Enemy protest song, but the Massive Attack version is sung by a woman. It is very cool.
The English Beat, Tears of a Clown is a cover of the famous Smokey Robinson song done in a Ska style. Go listen to English Beat right now. They influenced all sort of bands like Sublime, No Doubt, Green Day and many many more.
The Doors, Back Door Man is a cover of a Muddy Waters (I think) song. It is classic.
Led Zeppelin, Gallow Pole is a great version of the old school blues song made famous initially by Odetta. Go check her out.
Dusty Springflied did two covers that are perhaps her best songs. Son of Preacherman is an amazing song and Spooky is a better cover than the original.
And of course if your looking for Led Zeppelin covers sung by an Elvis impersonator in a reggae style, then look no further than Dread Zeppelin. All they do are covers!!!
Well, that sould get you started.

Joe Cocker's version of "Little Help from my friends" is better than the Beatles' version.
Bob Dylan was the first to release "House of The Rising Sun" although he stole it from the (I forget who) before they had a chance to do it....but I like the version done by The Animals better.
