The flowers are finished blooming. How do I get the seeds in order to replant next year?

Wait until the seeds are dark brown in the flower (or until the birds start to eat the seeds). Collect the entire flower and bring it inside. Lay it on a cookie sheet and cover with a cloth. The cloth is important to keep the bugs from infesting your house.

Leave in a warm, dry place for one or two weeks or until the petals are dry and the flower head crunches when you squeeze it. Shake the seeds out onto a newspaper. put the seeds into a tightly sealed container with about two tablespoons of pre-cooked rice (it absorbs water better). Seal and store in a dark, cool place until spring.

I planted Mammoth Gray sunflower seeds this summer and the seed package just says to "harvest when heads bend over from weight." The National Sunflower Association says that sunflower plants are usually ready to harvest when the back of the head turns brown, just snip off the head and rub the seeds out by hand.

When the center of the flower turns black, just cut the stalk and put the flower in a dry spot. The "black" part IS the seeds. After a couple of weeks, just rake the seeds out of the cluster. It's that easy.

When blooms are dry,rub them between your palms over a bucket and the seeds will fall out.

I think you pluck the seeds from the plant or the wind blows it away.
