I waited up all night at my grandparents house, listened to the countdown and seen the very first video. Do you remember the video? Now, do they even show videos? I think it was either the Beastie boys or Micheal Jackson responsible for the down fall of this once great phenomonon, how bout you?

corporate executives and mindless teenagers killed MTV.
Now I'm praying for tidal waves ....

I miss 120 minutes and IRS's the Cutting Edge and anything like that they ever aired

what was the 2 hour show that ended with "soon" by My Bloody Valentine playing over the credits? Buzz something or other, circa 1988

that half hour specials on bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees were nice

I miss Kevin Seals

It started going to hell with game shows (Remote Control) and the Real World ... or possibly even earlier

Does the world really need the VMA's?! (Or any awards show for that matter ...)

but even then they played their fair share of sucky top 40 crap

why DO they even leave the "M" in MTV??

Well, if you want to count all the shows they started on MTV, then the real downfall started in 1986 with Remote Control. That was the first TV show programming.

However, I think there were some pretty good shows during the 1990s. I liked the early years (the first couple of seasons) of the Real World, Beavis and Butthead, and Daria.

I feel that the real downfall (for me) started to come with the late 1990s, which is when they launched M2, I believe. Now, M2 was really cool because really cool because they would show all kinds of oddball videos, but I remember only being able to get it on satellite. However, today it has become just as bad as MTV.

Michael Jackson made MTV what it was when it was good. Thriller and Billie Jean truly elevated music video to an art form.

What killed MTV is that they started listening to focus groups too much and started deviating from music and into reality TV. Now instead of watching music we get 4-hour Yo Mamma marathons.

Martha Quinn

MTV found that guys would drool over a VJ and soon had her talking more and played fewer videos.
