Although Vietnam's government is central control (communist) their economy is a market economy (capitalism). Vietnam abandoned central control economy in 1985, and started economic reform, called Doi Moi or 'Rennovation', as an effort to move the country towards a market economy.
Doi Moi sputtered along through two minor reforms, and finally had enough gas to take off like a rocket. Economic growth took off after 1990, and Vietnam became the second fastest growing economy in the world after the turn of the Millenium.
The U.S. is soon to approve normal trade status with Vietnam's, and Vietnam is expected to join the WTO this fall. This will cause Vietnam's economy to expode once again.
The downside is rural unemployment has grown to alarming rates. 35%-40% unemployment is common in areas outside the major cities.

Complicated and hard to classify as it defies stereotypes. Vietnam's economy is socialist, but with a very strong capitalist influence. Becoming wealthy is no longer frowned upon, in fact, it is a sign of success. However, the government still would like the wealthy to help the poor, thus the socialist mindset remains. So, my answer is "Vietnam's economy is vibrant and healthy".

They are a communist country and very poor. My boss just came back from a 2 week vacation and he said there are a lot of talented artesans. He bought art that would cost thousands in the states for a few hundred dollars and ate fish and chicken every single day no beef since cows are a rare comodity.

I would suggest going here http://www.history.eku.edu/Topmiller/DEFAULT.htm and talking to this professor or getting one of his books. I worked in the History department on campus last year and I typed up his notes on Vietnam. He's been there numerous times and could tell you anything that you would like to know. His e-mail address is on his webpage. Tell him that you were refered by a previous office worker.
