Hi, if I ping the (domain?): 0323.0027.0246.0042
I receive a reply back from the IP address 211.23.166.34
My question is, how does this work? I'm not aware of any registrars that offer a .0042 domains?

Update: I am not trying to hack anyone and I am aware of how the standard TCP/IP tools work. My question is simply how one was able to associate an identifier (a domain or some sort?) with their IP address. I'm aware of registrars who offer .com, .net, .tv, .etc... domains however I don't know of any that offer .0042 so I want to know if one exists for that domain or if this name->ip translation is using another service?

Thanks for the information regarding the address being represented in base 8. I didn't think of that. Thanks! :)

Hi there. 0323.0027.0246.0042 is actually the same as 211.23.166.34, only it is in Octal (base 8) instead of Decimal (base 10.)

Octal numbers on computers can always be destiguished because they are always displayed either with a 0 at the beggining or 0x. IE: 0323 or 0x323.

You can use the Windows scientific calculator to convert octal to decimal. Click on OCT, enter your number, then click on DEC to convert.

Thanks!

When you go into command prompt and type ping ip address, it just determines how long it takes to access it. You can't "hack" anyones computer or anything like that using it if thats what you want to know.
