Dad bakes a tray of cookies. He eats one. Dave eats half a dozen. Kate eats half as many as Dave Jim and eileen each eat one third of remaining cookies. Hollis comes in and eat half of the cookies that are left. Last mom eats one. Dad comes back in and there is only one cookie left.

thanks everyone for your response to the question I thought it was 16 as well but I was told that answer was not correct so I am retracing what I have done. my confusion is with the 1/3.

There's one left after Mom eats one, so there were two.
That was half of the cookies after Hollis ate half, so there were four.
Jim and Eileen each eat 1/3 and the four are representative of the other 1/3, so there were 12.
Dave ate 6 and Katie ate 3 and Dad ate 1, so 10 + 12 = 22.
Dad baked 22 cookies.

Do it in reverse:
1 Left
Mom had one (2)
Holls eats half of what's left (total now 4)
Jim and eileen eat one third of remaining cookies (now 6 - 1/3 of 6 is 2 that's how I arrived at that)
Dave eats 6 (total now 12)
Kate eats half as many as Dave or 3 (total now 15)
Dad eats one = 16

the one that eat 1/3 remaining cookies is Dave Jim and eileen or Dave, Jim and Eileen, or that is Jim and Eileen, or just Eileen
