Elefnina was named after the “eleusis” (which means “arrival” in ancient Greek) of the goddess Demeter’s who came here looking for her lost daughter Persephone.To honor Demeter and Persephone, secret “Eleusinian Mystery” ceremonies were held.
Eleusina is the hometown of the most illustrious tragic poet of ancient Greece and of all time, Aeschylus (525 B.C.)
Megara was a powerful and autonomous city in Ancient Greece. Her seafaring people founded very important colonies in Sicily, by the Marmara and BlackSeas and the famous Byzance (today, Constantinople) on the coast of the Bosporus during the 6th and 7th centuries B.C.
Corinth was of the first cradles of art.It had become extremely rich and was ornamented with magnificent monuments and buildings, among which dominated the temple of Apollo and the Agora. The greatly prized Corinthian vases and idols were created in the city and painting and poetry flourished. A new style in the architecture of columns was elaborated, the Corinthian style.
Nemea was a renowned city of ancient times because of the great Panhellenic Games, called “ NEMEA ”, held there every two years, and also because of the famous Temple of Zeus of the 4th B.C., one of the most venerated sanctuaries in Ancient Greece .Ancient Nemea was also involved in one of Hercules’ labors that killed the Nemea Lion.
Tegea had its own currency and was the hometown of many writers, historians and lyric poets.
Sparta dominated the entire Peloponnese as an aristocratic, oligarchic and military state. Sparta has played a primordial role in Greek history.It was the greatest military power of Greece.The later Sparta did not produce art or philosophy, neither left us any written work, but its people were admired for their valor and for keeping alive the Greek values.
Sikyon was for the arts in antiquity what Athens was for philosophy. Two of the greatest artists in Sculpture were born here, who influenced the art profoundly.Many great artists studied at her famous schools of painting and sculpture.
Sikyon was the first settlement of Achaeans, therefore the most ancient city state of Greece. According to the old common belief it was here that Prometheus brought the fire to mankind.
Thebes the birthplace of the legendary hero Herakles and men of importance like Pindar and Epameinondas, played a major role in the affairs of Greece, from its early history as the many legends of the city testify. Though not a great power, for a short time, thanks to the genius of Epameinondas and its superb trained army, led by the Sacred Band, took the hegemony of Greece by defeating the invincible Sparta.Among other achievements was the formation of a league under its leadership, which united almost all the Boeotian cities.
Argos is the second oldest city of Greece. In the old times, it was of such significance, that Homer called all the Peloponnesians and often the rest of Greeks, Argians.During the 7th century BC, at the times of the tyrant Pheidon, who introduced weights and measures in Peloponnese and according to Aristotle he invented coinage.
Mykenae it became the most important city of Greece at the times of the king Agamemnon.Master seafarers, they traded in the whole eastern Mediterranean sea, until the 12th century.
The Mykenaean people build cyclopean structures, but at the same time they created the finest works of art.These were the heroic and adventurous people of the Iliad, the romantic poet warriors, the purest and best of Hellenes.
Delphi: for many centuries the voice of Delphi, the most important sanctuary, was the absolute guiding power to the Greeks. People as well cities visited it in order to get answers and guidance for their future and destiny. The oracles were listened and obeyed and their suggestive power was such, that wars were won or lost, by a few words of Pythia.Delphi, a religious and cultural center, imposed for the first time in human history international law, prohibiting the execution of prisoners of war or the pollution the waters of wells and destruction of aqueducts.Delphi influenced Greece not only religiously, but in education and literature, in art and trade and mainly on colonization. The offerings of individual and cities to the oracle of Pythian Apollo were enormous. More than five thousand works of art were at Delphi before it was destroyed.
Olympia: Every four years a pan-Hellenic truce was announced and people from all over Hellas gathered at Olympia, in order to compete and attend the Games. The prize for the winner was the "kotinos", a garland made from wild olive tree.Olympia was as sacred site as Delphi.

GREECE AGAIN changed its name to HELLAS OR ELLAS ... when they realized that their name means Greco.
