I hope you don't snap any cylinder head bolts! take the cylinder head off very carefully - using an engine crane and lift it a little bit at each corner. it may take you as long as 1 hour to lift it off without damage. slip off the gasket apply a funny weird type of blue grease (i forget what its called) to your new gasket. slip on the new gasket refit your cylinder head just as carefully as you fitted it. P.S you may need to get yourself some equipment for adjusting the timing. make sure you do not turn the camshaft or crankshaft when you remove it or make a mark and top of one of the gears to help you relocate the cam. I have never done this on a Cherokee but this is a generic way to go about it =D sorry to say this but $1000 is cheap for such a task xD

I don't have the info at hand, but I am pretty sure that you will find that it uses what is known as "torque to yield" fasteners for the head. This basically means that snug them down, and then turn them a specified amount related as in degrees of a circle or flats on the bolts' head, at which point they stretch(yield) not being able to pull down any tighter than the yield point. This also means that you throw away used ones and buy new ones to be able to set tension properly.

Here's a helpful site with torque specs and sequences for both the 2.2 and 3.1 liter motors:

I can't remember the sequence but as a general snug all bolts then start by torqueing center one then outer then another center than another outer and so on.....
Hope this helps.
