Make a funny story/picture with them that uses words that sound like the colonies. Here I'll do an example for you:
Georgia=George
New Hampshire=New hamster
Maryland=marry
New York=PORKupine (I know it's spelled wrong but Pork rhymes with York)
Delaware=wear
New Jersey= Jersey shirt
Massachusettes=Mass/church
Rhode Island=Island
Connecticut=cut
Virginia=Gin
North and South Carolina=Carols (add an “s” since there are two of them)
Pennsylvania=pen
Story/Picture:
GEORGE, the NEW HAMSTER, MARRIES a PORKUPINE WEARing a JERSEY, in a MASS that’s on an ISLAND. Aferwards, they CUT the cake, drink some GIN, and sing some CAROLS. Then they live happily ever after in a PEN.
During the test, recite that story to urself or remember that wacky picture. Everytime u say a word, u’ll remember the state. For example, when u say GEORGE, u think of Georgia, and so on.

Look at a map and go down from New Hampshire (remember at that time Maine was apart of New Hampshire) and study each one until you know them by heart! After all there are only 13 to remember! You can do this if you study!!

Here is a cool little mnemonic I found on the web:
New York (New York) cut (Connecticut) roast is (Rhode Island) much (Massachussets) nicer hot (New Hampshire).
Green (Georgia) salad (South Carolina) doesn't (Delaware) need (North Carolina) vinegar (Virginia).
Meat (Maryland) needs Java (New Jersey) pepper (Pennsylvania).

make up a song, or look at a map. when i was in third grade, i had a big map that was all along my wall. without even realizing it, i had learned ALL of the capitols... very strange. im sure if you just picture where the states are that will help also.
