They both led retreats (actually, Joseph led by default; most of the other Nez Perce chiefs died during the run to Canada, leaving him more or less in charge) and evasive actions against far superior forces, and, in so doing, caused the death of numerous of their followers. Neither is known by his given (native)name. Each gave a former Civil War general something to do for a few years in lieu of retirement. If you want more detail, learn to do your own research.
