the only con i can think of is it really seems like students lose all of their basic math skills by the time they reach high school and college b/c they become so dependent on calculators. remembering and remaining good at basic addition, multiplication, subtraction, etc. is really good for students. i would suggest allowing calculators and technology on most assignments, but every once in a while challenge students with basic math and timed tests to keep their minds sharp.

Sorry Kristin but I dont agree.

Calculators have no cons in the highschool setting. And in the elementary school their pros outweigh the cons.

A highschool math class is not a place to practice addition or multiplication. Its a place to learn how to think, period. Its a waste of time doing division (or long addition, subtraction...etc) by hand. Students need to spend more time on figuring out how to solve problems.

Students who by highschool have not memorized multiplication talbes can still benefit from an algebra class by using a calculator.

knowing how to add, sub, mult, and div is old math. it was important in the old days. Today its still important, but we have much more important math to learn in todays world. Dont waste valuable time on basics that once understood they can be memorized later but use a calculator to solve now.

At one time I would not have thought calculators should be used. However, we live in an age where tech is a way of life and it will only become more so.

By H.S. the basics should be already learned.

Use cacl's and tech!!
