Really depends on the style of music you want to play.

But I lean toward a black telecaster with white pick guard (Robert Smith) or silver mosaic tile telecaster (Daniel Ash).

Even the first Ocean Blue record featured some great lead sounds on a Telecaster.

And then there's the surf music sound ...

Stratocaster for good clean lead and melody riffs, Telecaster for bar chording and reverb, feedback... oh yeah!
