This is my 3rd pregnancy and the 1st that I have gotten acne with. I have it on my face, neck, back, and shoulders! I havn't had acne since puberty except for the occasional pimple around period and never on my body. Does anyone have anysuggestions for getting rid of it? I wash my face twice a day and obviously shower evry day. Has anyone used any over the counter creams or cleansers that have worked for them? Please help I am going nuts! I am 7 weeks.

Hormonal changes associated with pregnancy are a known cause of acne.

Since you are pregnant you need to discuss usage of any of them with your OBGYN to make sure they won't affect your baby.

Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.

In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.

Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.

In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.

If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

I have the same problem, my docotr prescribed me Benzoyl Peroxide 5% wash. Do not use any other products because some facial creams contain vitamin A which can cause birth defects, someone said Proactive, NO do not use that product, someone else suggested some natural pills NO do not use any of those. I wash my face and neck twice a day and it has worked just fine for me, I have been using it for 4 months now. My doctor said that in some severe acne cases they usually prescribe some antibiotics but this will ONLY be prescribed by your doctor after they have examined you. My doctor said NOT to use anything over the counter, because acne products are dangerous for pregnant women, why don't you make an appointment and ask your doctor what to use? Good luck!

I had this happen to me to some extent with this pregnancy.

For "spot treatment" most docs/references say to avoid salicylic acid, but benzoyl peroxide is generally considered okay. That's what I used to spot treat the acne after it already surfaced.

As for trying to avoid breakouts. I paid attention to the skin and noted what changes were occuring there. For me, I quickly found out my skin was more oily than it used to be. I had dry/sensitive skin prior to pregnancy, so everything I used was thick and moisturizing. Since my skin had basically turned into normal/combination, I adjusted my face care methods accordingly. I changed my moisturizer (I was using a thick cream, I replaced it with a lighter lotion), I changed my toner (I was using glycerin based, I changed to a witch hazel based, which is an astringent and excellent at fighting acne), I changed my cleanser (I was using a gentle creamy cleanser, I switched to a deep cleansing cream). I added a once or twice weekly clarifying/purifying mask as well.

Between all those changes, my face and neck have gotten much better (although I still get a pimple here and there on my chin, forehead and neck).

As for back and shoulders, I would try using exfoliant occasionally (I like the St Ives Apricot scrub); avoiding thick, scented creams/lotions in those areas; and extending the witch hazel based astringent onto those areas as well.

Good luck!

I Know exactly what you mean....I use those little cloths. The Equate ones actually work better on my face and arms for that fact than the expensive ones. But because of the hormones you won't get rid of them as quickly and are prone to more breakouts in more areas. Like embarrassing areas. I've always had acne problems but while i was pregnant (both times) I got it everywhere it seemed. My chest especially. I hope this helps...

Proactiv's base is benzoyl peroxide and my doctor said that it would cause no problem. I am 21 weeks pregnant and my baby is healthy (have done all the tests). I would recommend Proactiv. If you want to be cautious, just use the Proactiv cleanser during shower, Its on ur skin just for 30 seconds.

Pregnancy hormones do crazy things to us! I'm currently pregnant and experiencing the same problem you are, so I really believe it is the pregnancy causing us to break out. Good news is it will clear up after the baby's born! (Congrats, btw!)

Well I got it to and I mean severe I ordered THe proactive solution and it works great but if your not looking for something real pricey then do what I use to do put a dab of toothpaste on each pimple and let it harden then wash it off.

I'm a beauty therapist, & I recommend giong to your healthfood store & getting silica tablets, silicia is a natural thing that makes up hair & nails & skin... I'm pretty sure it's safe to use in pregnancy. But I started taking that & my skin went so clear in a matter of days!

Also when washing your face, use a gentle face cloth to remove dirt & makeup, I use jurlique products, they keep my skin nice & clear. Don't strip your skin with a foaming face wash, because then your skin will just make more oil to compensate... Drink heaps of water. When popping pimples, make sure you've steamed your face for atleast 5 minutes. If it doesnt have a head (blind pimple) leave it, it's not ready & forcing it will just agrovate. If it has a white head, use a sterile pin to break the skin on the side, wrap tissue round your fingers to protect your skin, & squeeze gently, if nothing comes out straight away dont force it, leave it it's not ready. blackheads you don't need to break the skin, but follow other instructions.

Good luck, I'm sure they'll clear up soon! Also try to avoid wearing makeup when you dont have to, wash all your sponges & brushes too, as well as telephones, they can carry bacteria speading... and pillow cases too!
