That is an excellent question. My guess is they estimate and/or lie ;)

The Nielsen survey pays people (not much though) to have a box attached to their TV. It has a button for each family member and one for a guest. When you turn on the TV the box keeps blinking until some one or more people push the buttons that say it is them. If you change the channel you have about a minute until you need to push a button again. A few time during every program the box wants you to push a button just to make sure you didn't walk out of the room. There is not a box for every viewer but Nielsen claims the sample is big enough that they can estimate total viewers.

i know this for a FACT...

When you buy you satellite or cable receiver box, there a little chip that is installed (secretly) in the box that records all the programs you watch and the amount of times etc etc...then all the tv companies do is receive the information for their results

OMG!
I know I have wondered that too. Maybe they ask so many people what they watched the night before. Like a poll. That is a good question!

I think they have a satellite that sends the channels to us so they know roughly by how many signals from that satellite of that channel have been sent to your TV do you know what i mean? and if you have sky or cable they know what channel you watch so they send them the information
