Why nonhuman? Why not a younger assistant?A little girl or boy who has an interest in science that is equal to the young scientist but not with the experience so the protagonist can give some instruction to the assistant. It could be a sibling or just another child in the neighborhood.
In theory a child would not only learn science but also learn how to relate in a respectful manner with other children.
Children already have enough non humans to relate to.Why not reintroduce the art of relating to another human!

How about a round bouncy alien that doesn't talk but grabs chemicals from the lab table as the host says, "You mean I should use some Chlorosophictritabulade??" ..and then the alien bounces and pours the stuff into the beaker for the doctor. And then stuff smokes up or explodes or whatever and the doctor explains what went right or wrong. lol. Do I get 10 points?

That sounds great! I loved Bill Nye. I'd watch him now if the show was still on. As for a sidekick, how about a robot? I know it's been done, but I kids love robots!!

I think it could be an alien of some sort of species that no one knows of because he was the only one left. He could talk but the main character can't prove it because the alien only talks to him.
Between show themes or plots his ultimate goal is to discover the origin of the little alien, he always comes close but not quite.

How about the paperclip from Windows? Or possibly a rubberband that goes square then becomes a television screen for inserts on what the segment is about.
