I mean illiterate in the sense they are still reading at a "Dick and Jane" storybook level. I've seen it happen.

Because they BS their way through. Anyone can memorize facts and dates and theories and timetables. When it comes to actually applying what you supposedly learned to a real life situation, that's different. Plus, nowadays you can get away with being stupid.
I used to be an Assistant Preschool Teacher, and also everyone on my stepdads side is a teacher. Let me tell you, this is not a profession to choose if you're trying to get rich. I've heard the cliche before, but you become a teacher for the love of it. School systems are doing the bare minimum because they can. When students get out, guess what? They can do the bare minimum to get by. The government will take care of you. I don't mean this in a bad way, I'm a single divorced mom, and I do rely on some help from the government. I'm getting heated up, I'm done... :)

School's may not know how to deal with certain students. Some kids are passed on when they should be retained or sent to an alternative school. Think about people who are adults and can't read. They get over their problem, by memorizing things or making excuses. This happens all the time and it's sad. But I since I am a teacher and know that some kids fall through the cracks especially with under-funding and large class sizes.

The school systems care, but they are over loaded with problems. I'm mainly talking about large city systems. The parents are not as involved with their child's education, many students hook school, schools are extremely violent with verbal and physical abuse daily, I'm talking attacking and hurting teachers, students hurting each other, kids not caring about learning, and teachers who are stressed out and are on blood pressure medication, anti-depressants, and tranquilizers. Teachers often work their 8 hours in the classroom, and maybe at least 4 or more at home. State tests don't help either, we have to teach to the test. Teachers care that children are graduating and can't read their diplomas, but we do our best. We need smaller classes, helpers in the room, and protection.

OK, my husband graduatedHigh school illiterate, his parents didn't care and the teachers didn't care if he could read or not, i believe that the schools are more worried about there test numbers and how much money they get per day per student than if they are actually helping the students to make sure that they are learning. I also have a son who is now in middle school who has a 3ed grade reading level, i work with him at home and i have ever since he was a baby, i read to him ever night. but he still has trouble reading. he has been tested for ever learning disability possible including dyslexia, thou he is not dyslexic he does have MMD. I tried and fought with the school system to have him held back in the second grade and they refused to let him stay they said "why should he be held back because he already knows every thing" i proceed to tell them because he hasn't learned it yet. But yet they had no trouble holding my daughter back and said it would be best for her. she is now in the 3ed grade and is a struggling reader and they do not want to offer any help to her at all. but i help her every night. i also read to her when she was a child.they don't care they also said that it would cause him to want to drop out of school when he got older. i was held back and so was my husband and we both graduated. so this just goes to prove that they dint care and they dint want to really have to "deal" with the students. It's all about money and numbers to them.

Teachers don't motivate them enough to learn to read.
Both of my nephews were considered to be above average readers in grade 10, when both their father and I knew they really didn't know how.
He forced one to read 30 pages a day during summer vacation, checking that he actually read that much by having him relate the meaning of the book.
The other one he paid $5.00/hr to read. After $500.00 he knew how and now has a degree in English literature. Both had no problems with schoolwork once their reading was up to snuff.

The burden is not on the school for the kids to learn , it is the failure of the parents to instill the value of an education. Kids are allowed to conentrate on music , sex , drugs and peer pressure , with no real accountability held for your their actions . No real value is placed on good character or a good education and the value of it . The school does have alot to deal with , but it is for discipline and punishment and not teaching . The teaching has always been available to those who want to learn . As the Bible say`s in Proverbs 23 : 12 - 13.......Apply thine heart unto instruction , and thine ears to the words of knowledge . Withhold not correction from the child : for if thou beatest him with the rod , he shall not die ..

Can't say I've ever met someone who graduated high school and was still illiterate. Are you using illiterate in the literal sense or in the "they're stupid" sense? Most areas in the US are instituting standardized testing that someone has to pass before given a diploma in addition to passing several writing criteria, so I don't see how someone could graduate and be totally illiterate.
