They are shy and like to crawl along the base of the walls and under things. I keep myhouse fairly neat so the spiders do not have many places to hide and surprise us...I got bitten by one baby spider, and it was in my bathrobe, it fell out and bit me on top of my foot below my big toe. It was a really painful sting, woke me up since I was very sleepy at that time...before I knew it was a brown recluse spider, and it was trying to run away. I killed it and threw it in the toliet. Then we called the poison center. Since the spider was smaller than 1/2 inch, I was able to stay home and kept my foot elevated and iced for 4 hours. The swelling went down and never became infected. I told my girls to wear shoes when they play in the basement because I see them mostly in the basement. So we are thinking about getting the house treated for brown recluse, but its $700 dollars and we have to keep pets and kids out for several hours. What a pain...

My uncle was bitten by a brown Recluse spider twice on the leg. It was in his work boot before he put it on. It was an ugly wound...it left two huge holes in his leg by his shin bone. It makes for an ugly scar. It's definitely not an experience that I'd want to go through...talk about some pain.
But to be honest, keep me away from any spider...I absolutely loathe spiders...I don't know which I hate more, spiders or snakes. But I think I'd rather deal with a snake over a spider any day.

Brown Recluse spider venom is "Necrotizing" meaning that the tissue that is exposed to the venom dies and rots. I have not been bitten, but when I was in the Army (Ft Bragg North Carolina) I did know a few guys that did get bitten. It is NOT pretty! The earlier you get treated, the less flesh you are likely to lose.
Hope this helps!

Fortunately, I have never been bitten, but if you ever are, do go directly to the hospital. EVEN if nothing appears to happen. Some people have light flu-like symptoms and they flesh might not even react for days. The venom in the bite however is necrotizing which means it will continue to eat away at and kill the flesh surrounding the bite. It requires anti-venom and if left long enough, plastic surgery to fix the scarring. Scarring can grow and grow if not treated. It is disfiguring as well as toxic.

My mom was. She was bitten and killed the spider. Luckily, she put it in a tissue and kept it. She went to the hospital with the bite and showed them the spider. She was treated and it okay.

I was bitten several years ago. In the evening I spiked a fever and had to go to the hospital. They lanced and drained the bite. I still have a scar from it.

Yes I have you really need to go to the doctor if you are bitten. The center of the bite will get a hole in it you'll become ill. Fever and the area will swell. Go to the doctor.

I got bit by one of those nasties between my toes. My foot swelled three sizes for over six hours.
I now kill all spiders that cross my path.

My daughter was bitten by one in Arizona when she was two. She still has a small red scar on her face. That was four years ago.
