I've added a whole lot of index entries, but now I want to get rid of them and start afresh, but it won't let me delete them all at once and I'm having to go through one at a time. Is there any way around this?

try to going to 'options' or to the section on the main bar where they permit you to set up the the screen in Default mode. select default set up if they give you that option and that might do the trick.

try this. After finishing a work and converting the final to pdf.. or whatever, and would like to restart a new project, go to Windows Start> Search> "indesign defaults" and "indesign saveddata"

Delete all.

Then restart Indesign for a new project. Let me know if this helped you.
