is it possible to replace these hoses by yourself using a chilton's manual, without having to either pull the engine much less end up putting it in the shop? my husband isn't sure he can get to the parts since the engine is so compact.

The radiator hoses should not be hard to replace on the Aerostar. If you are going to replace the heater hoses that is a little more difficult. The heater hoses are attached to the heater core with a plastic clip and 2 o-rings per hose. These clips have a release on each side of the clip. They can be a pain and are in tight quarters. Sometimes the clips break and must be replaced, the dealer has a kit complete with clips and 2 o-rings if it becomes necessary. There is also a metal tool about 2 feet long that is shaped like a "U" on the end to release the clips, because usually you cannot get a pair of pliers back there to release them. The dealer has the tool, and it may be available at the parts store, though I have never checked.

The hose can be replaced by yourself easily. Little patience and your on your way.Hears a few pointers>1 If you can remove the plastic part that cover the fan this will give you a extra 4 to 6 inches . 2 auto store for a extra small screw driver flat or Phillips
or for better grip use the 1/4 to 1/2 socket .3 when at the auto store Dint forget the Hose ,along with asking the store if the would come outside and show you .If there not willing to help well dont buy . You can find other autos stores with someone that likes people well if that does not help email me and i will help.

Yes you can change all the hoses without pulling the engine. The upper radiator hose is simple, the lower radiator hose is simple. The heater hoses are more a distress because you have to remove the inside cover! But once you do that marry another man! LOL just kidding. Marry a mouse. Na they arnt so hard as you think OK. Just Do It.
