My mom's doctor told her today that she tested positive for HPV, the main cause of cervical cancer. When she got married, she was 19 and my dad was 20. That was 30 some years ago, she's never been married to anyone else, and to my knowledge, she was not sexually active before she married my dad. Is it possible for monogamous women to get HPV? OR, has she definitely cheated on my dad? Either way, I'm more concerned about her health and her life, but I'd like to know. Please be honest ...

I have HPV and I've had cervical cancer removed from me (a colposcopy). It is a sexually transmitted disease through genital contact. Perhaps your father cheated on your mother and gave it to her? Perhaps your mother cheated with another woman?? (ewww.) Either way, this is a personal issue between the two of them and even if they haven't discussed it with you -- you better believe they are thinking about or have discussed it with each other!!!!!! See the source listed below for further info. Good luck and I wish your parents a lot of luck too. Be understanding of whatever happens, okay?

People who question why girls as young as the age of nine need to get this shot should realize that it's done that way as because girls who are younger are less likely to be sexually active. Telling them to wait until they are at around the upper age limit is unrealistic because most women by that age are already sexually active or have had sex. I found the part about HPV being the leading cause of throat cancer to be especially disturbing. Many people have this kind of sex as a way to prevent pregnancy or they wrongly believe it will protect them against a sexually transmitted disease. It doesn't.

There's alot of misinformation about HPV. My doctor told me after my diagnosis that even having 2 partners in your entire life can make you susceptible to HPV. It is a virus and like any other virus can show at any time. There is a type of HPV that is sexually transmitted and also involves genital warts. Be treated and don't let anyone make you or your mother feel bad or "slutty" for having HPV. Its ignorance that spread disease

yes, monogamous women can get HPV. It's not a disease it's an infection. Just like anyone can get a yeast infection.

You're making only one of several possible assumptions. Yes, it's possible she cheated on your dad...but it's also possible he cheated on her, and passed the virus to her. Yet another possibility is that he was infected before he married her. I'm not sure how long the virus can be harbored in your body before it becomes noticeable. That would be helpful to know.

I came up with this little virus during my marriage. I thought we had a monogamous relationship. Turns out my husband (now my ex) was sleeping around when he was drunk. He didn't even remember doing it .. but his girlfriend sure did.
I got immediate treatment and a divorce. I still have annual checks to be sure I have no further problems.
