I'd recommend the Comfort Inn Suites in Lansing. It has an indoor pool, free continental breakfast and there are plenty of family restaurants nearby (Applebees, Bob Evans, etc.).
It is about 25 miles from downtown, but despite what others are telling you... if you don't run into traffic, you will still be ahead pricewise if you pay for gas & parking at the Aquarium/Children's Museum. You might also consider parking at the Museum of Science and Industry, as it is also close by and a great attraction.
Have fun!

Hi Goose!
First of all, don't listen to the person who said Springfield. That is not anywhere near Chicago.
Can you give an idea what your price range is?
Generally certain hotel chains are consistent. For example, Courtyard by Marriott, Hampton Inn, and Hilton Garden Inns outside the city limits are all equipped with a pool and provide breakfast.
However, parking downtown is hard to find and is not cheap (neither is gas), So rather than waste any precious moments of you family vacation commuting, you might be better off just staying downtown. If you pick a hotel in the right are, it will most likely offer a free shuttle swervice to the sites you'd like to see.
Have a fun and safe trip!

This is the big city so expect big city prices. I included the entry and parking fees.
Bensenville is not close to the attractions you want to visit ...26 miles...so the money saved on a room will be eaten up by fuel costs to and from the hotel. Parking at the Aquarium is $15.00 and admission is as follows ADULTS $23 Children (ages 3-11) $16 This is for all of their attractions. A lower fee for entry to onl aquarium. A better deal is the Chicago City Pass...The Chicago CityPass gets you into five famous Chicago attractions for one low price.
CityPass is simple. You have nine days to visit each attraction (once) beginning the day you first use your CityPass. In addition to full access to Shedd Aquarium, CityPass includes the Hancock Observatory, the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry.
Check out Essex Hotel chicago.....in a yahoo search. I think they give free tickets to the Field Museum....a short walk to Shedd Aquarium...see a real dinosaur!

How close do you % to stay to the city? Joliet isn't the desirable place to stay, there are some good lodges in Tinley Park IL which could be on your way you would be able to verify there, in case you % closer to the city there are additionally some great lodges interior the Schaumburg area.
