If you want to make sure the files are deleted for good and can't be retrieved, you'll want to use a file shredder like File Shredder Pro from StompSoft. If you just delete them without using a file shredder, you run the risk that someone will be able to get them back.

Highlight the unnecessary files in the GUI of your operating system. (Presuming your operating system does, in fact, have a GUI) Locate and press the key on your keyboard labeled "delete." You may not be done yet! Many operating systems do not immediately delete files off of your hard drive when initially "deleting" them. Look for something called "Trash" or "Recycle Bin" in the main view of your GUI. In the its options, look for something along the lines of "empty." That should delete those files from your PC for you. :)

Do a clean disk thru start button, accessories, system tools, then go to www.webroot.com they have a free 30 day trial of windows washer and spyware remover. Launch a virus removal scan and when you are done defragment your computer. This should free up a good percentage of your memory.

i wouldn't recommend it unless you really know what you are doing... deleting files won't help your system run faster (but it will save space on your hard drive)

How do you define "unnecessary"?
That depends on what you use your system for and what software you run.
