I have removed and reinserted the sim with the same results. Phone tells me I can only make emergency calls, and will not let me charge the phone.

-The sim chip reader is probably bad or something. You may need to have it repaired. Call your carrier or whoever you bought the phone from.

Remove the sim card and clean the gold contacts with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth and re-insert. Make sure the gold contacts are facing down (towards the phone) when you slide it in. If it's still giving you this message take it into a dealer store to have it tested.

sounds like your sim card has gone bad did you leave it in the sun too long?

are you sure its the right brand? they are all different and will cause the phone to not know if theres anything in it. or it could be messed up.
