It depends on a few things. It depends on where your tattoo is and how much body fat is in that location. For example, I got a tattoo on my lower back, centered over my spine. It hurt when they went over my spine (I'd say a 5 out of 10) but was only annoying on the rest of my back (2 out of 10). The more fleshy the area, the least pain you should feel. As always though, everyone's experience will be slightly different.

I have three and believe it or not it seemed that the one on the small of my back hurt the worst. My husband kept leaving to get me more beer and that seemed to help some. I base it on the pain of childbirth. I've given birth twice and compared to that it was nothing. On a scale of one to ten I'd say it was between a 5 and 7. It's all worth it in the end though because you have a beautiful tattoo to look at for the rest of your life.

I depend on your tolerance for pain, where the tattoo is put and what type of tattoo you get. If it requires alot of detail those tend to hurt because it has to be shaded in.
To me it was more annoying than pain.
The tattoo on my arm 3, on my thigh 5 and my back 4.

Everyone has a different tolerence for pain, my 2 might be your 8.
You know a tattoo is a permanant disfigurement of your body.
What will it look like in 25 years when your body has changed?
Think it over & over & over...then give up the idea!

its hard to say as tattoos depend on your own pain barrier ..but some liken it to having sunburn and then being scratched ...mine were not too bad at all the ones that twanged a bit were my ankle and lower back asi had it done very low ...but its how much you want one that makes the difference really ... if you look at my 360 page ive put a few pikkies of my tattoos on there ..the 1 on my shoulder is the 4th cover up on it ...
