Do you think that our Nation's industries would come to a complete hault if ALL the truck drivers quit driving semi's??? My husband is an OTR truck driver and I have thought about this situation quite often. If you don't, then how do you think places would receive their merchandise???

for tjc...no one complained to me about truck drivers. As I mentioned, my husband IS an OTR driver. It is just a thought that I have entertained occasionally. A "what if?" I know what my husband and his fellow drivers face on a daily basis. I was just wondering if anyone else thought the same way I do about the "what if" situation. That's all

It certainly would cripple commerce.
BUT that isn't something that will happen. The OTR culture is much too dominant. In addition, the reason MANY ORT's are doing what they do, is because there is this little something in inside most all of them (I must include me) that absolutely resents IMMEDIATE supervision, or being told what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Most OTR's are very good at what they do, no matter what it is, and supervision of the sort most have to deal with is like a bur under the saddle. On the road, there may well be a boss, even if it is only the customer (broker, contractor, supplier) but he isn't sitting right next to him telling him what move to make, which way to turn. His only real constraints are deadlines, and DOT and the Highway Patrol.
"Just tell me what you want, then get out of my way. I'll tell you when I am done". This is the work ethic and attitude most have, and are insulted by the mere thought that someone has to hold their hand to get the job done.
Most are very capable, but "don't work/play well with others", and you will RARELY see "Team _______" on their hats. They strive for personal excellence, and don't hang around waiting to see what someone else is going to do.
There have been movements to "strike" by the independent industry, and it has always failed to live up to the potential.
1) They have bills to pay, and families to support. The thought of bankruptcy brought on by volunteering not to work is immoral to them.
2) NO ONE, not even another trucker is going to TELL them what they can or can't do.
For the most part, a very honorable bunch.

Everyone would suffer. If OTR or Dedicated drivers quit. The entire country would grind to a halt, not just industry.

Example: screw the common goods, who the hell would deliver OUR gas?

The reason for trucking in the first place was to cut business over head by not having to house materials for their products.
They only have delivered what they can use in a certain period of time.

I don't think it would ever happen. Sounds like someone ruffled a feather or two. We are a very sophisticated and complex economy, so who ever complained to you about OTR truckers was not thinking well. There would have to some extraordinary circumstances to make that come to a halt. Transportation in any economy is critical and you would be right, almost all large companies would be disrupted.

It'd happen in any country, not only industry, but even homes, society in general would suffer. Unfortunately the transport business, the people in it don't get the importance or credit for the work they do to keep a nation running.

Complete halt is putting it nicely! The economy would crash and we would be in 1929 all over again.
