The land line is used to upload your pay-per-view information and things like that. It's also used to upgrade your software as well. You have to leave your phone line plugged in (even if you never order any ppv), otherwise after a while, they'll disable your service, and you have to call them to get it reactivated. I've never had a problem noticing my phone line being busy. I think it dials up periodically at weird hours so it doesn't affect your regular use at all.

You only need a land line to order Pay per view movies. Directv requires that you make a daily call on your system which is done automatically. This way they can check the balance on your access card and know what paper view movies you have ordered. I know that if you go without making a daily call for over 250 days your ability to order payper view movies will be turned off. You can still order them on line and on the phone. Hope this helps, DirecTv is way better than cable and make sure you get a DVR, it is a little bit more money but way better than watching regular TV.

I was going to go with Direct TV but after looking into it I found that Dishnetwork was cheaper in the long run, However they require a phone line to be plugged into the reciever. Our reciever works two TV so it actually works like two recievers instead of one as long as we keep the phone line plugged in though we are only billed for the single reciever rate which saves us about 5 dollars a month. With the phone line plugged in the reciever updates everynight but it does it in a way that doesnm't effect the phone line at all.

You need a phone line for ppv and to use the TiVo (DVR). If you don't use these things, you don't need a phone. I must have my TiVo. I use it all the time to record on. I like my Direct Tv way better than cable tv.

The only reason you need a phoneline is to purchase pay-per-view movies and events. Otherwise you dont need the phone hooked up....mine isn't.

It is for ordering pay-per-view movies. Otherwise, you don't really need it.

it's only for them to program the recievers and you won't even notice it.
