I live just near Tower Bridge in London (ie near the city) and I have a car. I don't use the car to go to work in the city (as I walk) and I wouldn't take it somewhere like Oxford Street as it is way to busy and much easier to use public transport. I tend to use the car on weekends eg to go to shopping centres in the suburbs, to go on day trips around southern England or to go over to the continent (by ferry). For day to day purposes in London, you don't really need a car. But if you want to explore further afield or if you don't like the idea of carrying your groceries home then a car is a good idea.

Parking spaces can be quite hard to find depending on where you live. A lot of suburbs have street parking but you will require a council permit to park there. Newer developments tend to have parking but townhouses and older developments don't tend to.

Keep in mind that there is a congestion charge of £8 per day if you go into central London. If you do intend to get a car, factor this cost in if you find that you will need to cross through the relevant area on a daily basis.

most people in london rich or middle class take the public transportation since the roads can be packed with people and are too narrow for a parking space.

Most Londoners use public transport or bike, and sometimes it is hard to find parking spaces, no matter what vehicle you're driving.

public transport any day... it's too expensive as well as time-consuming to own a car and use it within central london. within the suburbs, yes, it becomes useful... but in central, you'd end up hunting for parking for hours, besides paying daily congestion charges (£8+), etc... and then u have the rising fuel charges, not to forget!!!
