gas was cheaper and after you paid the cashier, you could BOND WITH YOUR CAR while the gas was pumping ~ clean out your car, straighten out your dvd case, etc.
Now, TODAY, you give the cashier $20.00, put the nozzle in your tank, and then it goes "CLINK, you're done!!!"

When gas was cheaper, nobody straightened out any DVD cases. Of this I am certain.

Gee, I remember just a few years ago being annoyed that gas was $1.79/gal. Now I wish for those days! Not so long ago I could fill my little car for $15.00! Alas, those days are gone forever. I have a rule now, my car gets only $20.00 per trip to the pumps. Sometimes it's a tad less than 1/2 tank. Oh well!

When I got my first car-a 1970 AMC Javelin, gas was 33.9 for regular and 35.9 (Cents) for premium 100 octaneand I had to use the premium leaded gas. The lowest I saw was in 1971 during a gas war in Albany NY 25.9. Then when gas started to go up in '74, 45 to 65/gal some guy got in trouble w/ the state for raising his price to 99.9 !!! Of course I was making under a $100.00/week. So it didn't take long either to put $5.00 in the tank.

Remember gas at 25 cents a gallon in the late 50's and early 60's.. There were no emission controls on the "old tarmac showboats".And on some roads you could go as fast as you could or dared.
Sigh: that part of the old days was good.
Dan.

I remember when I first started driving (1974), gas was about 34 cents a gallon. Used to take road trips and would only bring about $10.00 for gas money. Oh, well -- gas is STILL cheaper in the US than bottled water.

Yeah, I remember when I first started driving, fuel averaged about 25.9 per gallon (regular) and 28.9 for ethyl.
The real deal was when certain stations at certain corners in almost any town would start "Gas Wars". Then you could find it for as little as 18.9 per gallon, but usually not less than 19.9.
We always look back to the good old days, but there are SOME things worth the price. Sigh . . . .

Isn't it sad??? I am so glad that you asked this. Because not only did it take me $45.00 to fill up the gas tank on my mini van, but I also cleaned out my car today!!! It is such a great feeling to ride in a clean vehicle, but the euphoria wears off when you hear the "clink" and see how much it is going to cost you.....LOL

I can remember being able to drive to the next town and back on $1.00 and that was 16 miles. When I was a teen, we used to pool our tip money,( three of us were waitresses) and have enough to fill the tank 3 or4 times. And we had big cars with big tanks. Gas was 29 cents a gallon. we could go to the local burger joint with $2 and get a burger, fries and large coke, and it was enough to fill you up.

I rember gas beign about 40 cents per gallon, and you're right: not only could you bond wiht your car, but you told an attendant how much you wanted, and they took care of everything, including paying the bill, and bringing you your change. Times change.
