Hey, I've been there... you need to talk about something where you learned a lesson. You could focus on when you were younger, but I'd recommend something when you were older and perhaps something that could have been disastrous. For example, I had a friend who offered me a ride home after a party. He didn't look like he should be driving and I told him so. He laughed and drove off. It was the last time I saw him alive. He was killed, and he took another life with him. The lesson I learned was that I should have been more persistent in trying to help my friends... I should have grabbed those car keys and told him no way!
Okay... now that you've read my example, I want you to know that I totally made it up! No one will know if you make up a story and learn a lesson... so be creative and don't sweat it! You can even use my example if you want. It's just a speech, and if you decide to fictionalize it, that's up to you. Good luck!

Make an inventory of your personal experiences. These questions will help:
What are specific aspects of my life and work experiences?
What problem did i solve at school or college? How?
What have I learned in the last 5 years?
What unusual experience have I had, and how did I cope with them?
Did I met with special inspiring people, what have I learned from them?
What are my special skills or knowledge?
Do I represent a organization? Which one? Why? What is the most important lesson I've learned in that function?
I think these questions will help you finding an original experience where you learned a lesson. But keep it simple.

Don't do the usually, cheesy schmarmy crap. Ummm....first of all, haven't you ever learned a lesson in life before? Like
"don't lie" or
"don't cheat" or
THE BEST:
"don't wait until the day before a speech is due and then post a question on Yahoo! Answers in hopes of getting an idea"???
Actually, that last one would make for a funny speech. "I learned that procrastination will get me nowhere." I'll bet you get some pretty retarded responses on here and you can just use them as fuel for the humor of your speech.
Enjoy...and good luck!

I would make something up. Your professor will never know that you didn't actually have the experience you will talk about for your speech. I would talk about drinking. Say you got drunk, and did some stupid stuff. Then say that you learned your lesson, and that you won't do it again. Exaggerate. Make it sound good.

That I went to Yahoo! answers for a clue instead of doing the work myself and learning a lesson. I sure hope you are not a Communications major!

can't help you, i have no idea what kind of experiences you've had. It could be about a time you scraped your selve when you were in elementary school, or got sent to time-out for the first time. Stories from early childhood most always go over well, because they always seem like a big deal back than.

Have you ever said something (like gossip) and had bad results? I once spread a piece of gossip, and there was a person involved right there in the group I was in and I didn't know it. NOT my finest moment. I keep my mouth shut now.

Make it something heartwarming to ensure a good grade. Something along the lines of "to never take life for granted".
