Because people are irresponsible and breed dogs without thinking of what would happen to the puppies. If the animal control didn't put them down, what would happen to them? There are not enough homes. Soon animal control would run out of room, then what would happen to the rest of the unwanted stray dogs? They would be left to starve or die a horrible death in the wild. Until laws are changed to prevent people from breeding dogs any way they want, then animal control will have to perform this sad, but necessary act. Spay an neuter!!!!!

First you need to give an example of what you are talking about.

I will give examples of where I worked in KC MO

If an animal is picked up without tags and running loose. If the dog is severly injured it is euthanized. The city is not going to pay for vet care for a stray dog or cat.

If the animal is picked up with tags and is injured it is taken to the vet listed on the tags. IF they will accept the animal.

Injured wildlife is taken to the local nature center where they do wildlife rehabilitation or it is put to sleep. This is usually at the discretion of the officer.

Healthy animals that are euthanized. Usually after about a week (the hold period) many of the animals are developing some type of illness. This has to due with the environment they were rescued from and then being put in a shelter with several hundred other dogs who some are sick. So the sick dogs, aggressive dogs and non-adoptable dogs (pitbulls, bite dogs) are all put down first. The remaining dogs are chosen if no space is available.

I have some animal control stories that will curl your toes. Many people would be truly amazed at how some people treat their animals.

And unfortunatly it is not like on animal planet. Many shelters cannot afford or is to cheap to provide vet care for the animals they pick up. KC MO is cheap and is not going to provide vet care for stray dogs or cats.

Animal Control puts down animals that are acting violently, or that have physically attacked a person. They will not put an animal down automatically. First they check the license number, and if there isn't one, they check for a microchip that lists the owner & address.

From there, they can also check if the animal has a history of violence. They contact the owner, if they can. If not, they put the animal into an animal shelter. As long as the encounter wasn't violent, the animal sits in the shelter until someone claims them, or a pre-determined date comes along. At that point, sadly, the animal is put down. Before that, though, every effort is made to make certain the animal has a home first.

They dont put them down just because they catch them as strays. They hold the animal for 7 days in hope that someone will clam it, plus they use this time to check for diseases, mites, fleas and etc... After 7 days they put them up for adoption, most places try to give the animals second chances and if the animal is running out of time at the shelter they usually place them in a foster home or another shelter. Putting the animal to sleep is the last resort. Animals that do get put to sleep is ones that are very sick and is no hope, and animals that a vicious and can't be placed in a home.

Dogs get put down because morons don't want to get their pets spayed and neutered. Also because people think puppies and kittens are 'cute' and get them for their kids (and do not have them neutered). When their kids don't want them or don't take care of them because they're grown up and not 'cute' anymore, they abandon them at the local supermarket where they half starve while multiplying.

People, GET YOUR PETS SPAYED OR NEUTERED. Men are the worst for this, as they 'feel' for their male pets and can't do the snip-snip. Well, my fiend had to put his dog to sleep because he didn't fix him and he became agressive and attacked the friends' mom.

Also, people who pretend to be 'breeders' because they want to make some extra cash. These people are the worst, breeding pit bulls and mixing poodles and other small dogs to make more 'cute' freaking animals.

If you want a pet, adopt one, then there won't be so much killing of unwanted animals.

Wow...I guess this subject means a lot to me.

Oh, and the person who posted above me isn't 100% correct. Not ALL shelters give animls a second chance, and not only the sick and hopeless animals are euthenized. Many healthy, loving animals die every day because there aren't enough adoptive people to take them. Yes, some shelter do try to foster or give chances to animals, but many do not have the funds or resources and just simply euthenize animals that aren't adopted in so many days.

They try to adopt all the animals they can. Unlike Humane Societies they can't refuse animals when they get full at some point some animals must go to make more room. As far as I know they don't put down puppies or kittens unless there's a health reason, at least they give them the best chance to get a home.

I don't think they do automatically. They usually give the owner time to come get the animal. If the animal is aggressive, sometimes they will for obvious reasons. Other than that, there's only so much room at the shelters. It's really sad, but there's just no room and no homes for them. That's why it's so important that people spay and nueter their pets.

They don't like having to put them down, but do to irresponsible pet owners and people not getting their pets spayed or neuterd, often times they have to. Most will try to place animals in good homes, but there are many who are unadoptable for a number of reasons such as food agression, people or animal aggression, or illness. If more pet owners would be responsible, then aco's wouldn't be faced with the terrible task

They only do that when thay are certain the dogs or any other stray animals can't be saved and r goin 2 die. Otherwise, if nothing is wrong or if something can be done 2 save the animal, they would keep it and wait if anyone wants 2 adopt the pet.

They have no choice. More come in daily. The city can't afford to feed hundreds of lost dogs. They have a set limit, where if the owner doesn't claim the animal it has to be put down. I'm sure they hate it as much as, well almost, the dogs.
