The easiest way is to tell them how it has helped you. Giving examples how understanding yourself has given you confidence....or how it helped you know what your strengths were and focus on a career where they would shine....
By showing REAL EXAMPLES of how it helps, they will see. THEN, ask them to brainstorm in groups times when they have been helped by understanding themselves.

I contend that 17 year olds, even though they believe they are adults, are not capable of understanding themselves yet. I don't mean this in a derogatory way, I have two daughters (17 and 19). In order for a person to understand who they are they must have something to refer to, and life experiences to fall back on. True self understanding comes later in life.
Perhaps it would be more useful to say, instead of expecting to find self understanding immediately, that they keep their minds always open to learning new things, making good life choices, and exposing themselves to new ideas and opportunities. By "living and learning" they will come to understand how truly unique and special they each are.

There is no self understanding without knowing where we came from & what our purpose is - get out your bible, start with Genesis and read the story of your life. God created us for fellowship with Him, sin broke out in Eden because God had given them free will - He wanted them to choose to love Him, he didn't want robots. From then on, sin permeated the world & all peoples - but that is not the end of story. In the new testament, Jesus comes onto the scene and actually dies for our sins - He dies a hideous, excruciating death & ascends to heaven many days later, promising to come back for us - so, we are created for fellowship with God, we have a Savior in Heaven who rallies for us & our mission (Matthew 28) is to spread the word and make it through this crazy world. Wow - if that isn't understanding self - I don't know what is!! Get busy reading so you can find out what ultimately happens to us!

hhmmm....it might be helpful to have them understand what is in their hearts when they do something good or bad. This might help them understand themselves and explain why they do things.

if they know who they are, they know what will fulfill them in their life
if they know what will fulfill them, they will have firmer goals and stronger energies
you can get to know yourself better by imagining yourself in any and every occupation: and asking what would i enjoy about this job, what would i not like about doing it
