The cracks in between the concrete slabs allow space for the slabs to expand on a hot day. If the sidewalk was made of a continous slab, it will most likely break up and become very uneven on a hot day.

Concrete expands and contracts, but is very unforgiving in that it is also brittle. The least amount of pressure difference exerted on a point that has no give (crack) to allow for release of the pressure, the slab will rupture.

Easier for future repairs. If a part of the sidewalk is damaged, then it's easier to chip away at that section and re-surface it. If it were a long surfaced strip, it would crack when a portion was chipped away for resurfacing that portion that needed repair.

It allows them to expand and contract with the temperature. One long strip would crack.

concrete will crack at the weakest point so if tree roots or poor soil conditions crack your walk way your repair would be concentrated
