If you know what you're doing, you're half way there. Legal stuff is just that.....stuff. Here's what you do:

1. Call your local City Hall. Tell them you're starting a business in your home (or wherever you're starting it) and you need to know what Forms you need to complete and where to pick up those Forms. Usually, these people are very helpful.

2. Show up at City Hall. Get the Forms. Complete them.
. Bring them back to City Hall and file them.

3. There are fees to pay when you start a business. You need a Business License. That's filed with the Secretary of State and you can't do business without it. Then, if you're working from home, you need a permit for that.

4. If you want to incorporate your business, you need an attorney, unless you have some legal knowledge. If you're starting small, go with a sole proprietorship. Incorporate later.

5. Go to your local SBA (Small Business Association). They have Mentors, who will give you practical help.

What's the significance of living on the east side of the river? I didn't understand that.

Good luck with your business!

you need more help than you realize. starting a business takes more than having a paper. if you need legal help go to the yellow pages look in lawyers for one that specializes in businesses. if you need someone to tell you this you need to do more work and study on what a business is all about. i wish you luck. i live on the east side too

Well, what is your business? Provide a service? Retailer? I opened a hair salon and I had to get a Salon Business License (fill out a form and pay $100.00). I had to get a Federal Tax ID number....retail license, also. Just filled out a form....call tax number an accountant gave me. Had to give them information on form I filled out, then they gave me Fed. ID #. Then I had to go to local tax office, give them that # and pay $50. They gave me a retail license to hang in my business and sent me a Tax book for paying my retail tax monthly (or you can set it up quarterly). You need to also go to your city hall and get a city business license to hang in your business....will have to pay fees..renew it once a year, just pay tax.

But this procedure may change a little depending on what type of business you have.
