to learn about how people who once lived in those ancient cities lived. archaeologists are particularly interested in finding out how advanced the civilization was in art, architechture, writing, design, and social customs.

Because we are driven to know all that is hidden, whether it is in the future or the past. By unearthing and learning about our past we are better able to understand our present and plan for the future. There is an old saying, "one who does not learn from the mistakes of the past is doomed to repeat them in the future." Or words to that effect.
