By the title of the subject line, I specially mean the way most of the younger crowd seem to feel, basically those in middle school thru high school. I never really felt this way though school, but most of my peers did. The people that had enough "guts" to ditch school and drop out, or go off and drink/do something even more stupid, were typically the schools "cool" crowd.

Its actually pretty funny seeing as when I was in high school getting beaten the crap out of by the cool crowd I would always tell them that I'd rather be lame then end up a looser like they would...years later, most of the people that picked on me never graduated from high school, some are dieing from HIV (which was actually a pretty good laugh), and some are even in jail or prison.

So why exactly is being stupid/poor so cool?

You answered your own question, but I will throw in my two cents worth....

I know what you mean about middle/high school aged kids. In my school, only the white, upper-middle class suburbanite kids tried to act poor or uneducated. They were all from the 'hood' in middle-suburbia.
It was the socioeconomically underpriveleged kids that made a big deal out of making the grade or wearing expensive athletic shoes, or having a nice car stereo......
FUnny, how the measest kids never did anything different with their lives when some of them graduated. Karma has a way of taking care of things.....
Being stupid/poor is not cool, but some kids need to rebel against everything their parents value, as an immature way of exerting their independence. They seek to create their own identity.
I think a part of it is that idol worship and the media. Maybe it's the worthless celibutantes, and thugs......(you would think, with all that money they are making, they could aford some nice porcelain crowns and veneers). In the last 10-12 years or so, more and more worthless people are idolized because of what they have and who they know, rather than those witl actual talent and merit.
It is up to the parents, what will be tolerated or not. It is up to the parents to instill values on their kids.
Too many people are too busy to raise their kids. There are far too many electronic "babysitters" raising kids, and parents with too many committments and demands on them, outside the family.
Remember the days where pay phones and maps were readily available, and used frequently? In our fast-paced society, more and more people are living to work, rather than working to live.
It is the younger generation, the kids, that pay the price. Kids can't raise themselves. Look at how they are doing on their own.

Things were kind of the same at my school. I would even catch some of the people that seemed to be so cool and school in line at the grocery store with their parents with food stamps (and they always had nice clothes at school).

This is what I figured out...Those people did not get attention for being smart (because they weren't) or any extra clout for being wealth (again because they were not), so they had to get attention be being the only thing they could be "cool". Too bad for a lot of kids the middle school and early high school perception of cool involves picking on people, being "tough", or breaking rules and laws.
Kinda sad that's the only thing they can offer the world - being "cool", and that dies out at 18. Then they're left being the nobodies around town or worse like you said while their victims move on to have successful or atleast normal lives.
Makes me glad I wasn't as cool as I once wished I could be.

i think being stupid is NOT cool. being educated is very important. the people who don't think and are stupid and drop out of school and go out and have sex at a young age are ignorant and have no intelligence. being poor, well you cant help that if you're just a kid. People not getting themselves a good education and throwing their lives away are pathetic. Those people will probably end up getting aids, die, or have a lame job and a bad life. For those people who WERE like that and changed and made a better life, good for you.

Being stupid and poor IS NOT COOL. Why would anyone want to be either. It's an age thing. Staying focused on studies and grades, having fun and making good friends in school is COOL. Trust me -

It's really not cool. I agree with Annie R.

It depends on who you hang out with and what attitude you choose approach people and friends.

I really think that your personality would count for this question.
Many people may evaluate your personality in private either if they like it or not.

So just stay cool and be the person your meant to be.
Come clean every single step of the way.
Sweep away all those swear words away and people will love you for you!

Ciao for now!

I think you answered your own question.

It really depends on who you are hanging around. It is not cool. High school lasts for a very short time, you can keep hanging with the "cool crowd", or you can become a productive adult.

I hope you have moved on. Good luck

The saddest part is that you actually sat down and submitted this .Even sadder , is I'm answering . By your intelligence you didn't pay attention in school , so technically you ditched yourself .Being poor isn't cool ."Ha ha , look at the poor people".You are cool , because you are so , so stupid .You are spiritually poor , that's worse than being financially embarrassed.Saddest is ,you think its funny that people die of aids , sick puppy .

Its a stupid attitude to stick to. for people who say "what's appearing black" trouble-free you recognize what they are touching on. I agree that if your pronounced in the suburbs with a reliable education there is not any clarification for blacks or whites to be appearing "gangster" its no longer actual. optimistically they'll advance out of it because of the fact it rather does no longer something for their destiny till they plan on pursuing a profession in rap video clips.

I have no clue. I am poor, but I refuse to be stupid. Hopefully, I won't be poor in the future since I am attending college. Some of my friends are like that and I try to talk to them, but it's like talking to no one, since they don't listen at all. I have come to the conclusion that as long as it isn't me, I won't worry about it.
