To muffle the air rushing into the engine and the filter in there is to stop sand and grit. Some air boxes align the air flow past the air flow meter.

assume that you are talking about that thing with the air tube coming up into the bottom of the "air intake tube" - which goes into the big chamber with the airfilter in it! That "air box" also known as the "hot air control; box) is controlled with a vacuum module that is supposed to open it (via a temperature controlled"vacuum switch"). It is supposed to route hot air from the exhaust manifold into the air cleaner, - when the temperature gets near freezing - to keep the air intake system (or carburetor) from being choked off with ice crystals. From moisture in the air. "ice will stall the engine, -- after it gets going slower and slower, till it can't run anymore. After about 5 minutes it will melt, making the engine hard to get going again, but after it starts, it seems to be good as ever, - (till it ices again!)

is this a bmw or vw if yes its a part that mesures the amount of air that passes through it to adjust the fuel spray from the injectors
are you talking about the mas air flow sensor its the same thing

some have a chamber that helps with noise
