Sir or Madam:

The key to your problem is in the plug at the end of the headset cord. Most computers have a mini jack for sound out (to headphone of headset), and a mini jack for mike input (to your mike in headset - assume headset has a mike). Take your headset to any electronics place that sells recorders or computers with audio features. Ask a tech sales rep to test your headset by plugging it into a recorder or into the back of some working computer on display. They can tell you in a jiffy what is wrong, and usually at no cost.

In Control Panel, check the settings of your headset and sound card. Often the mic is muted at the sound card to prevent it from injectiong noise when you are trying to record something.

check the sound properties by either double clicking on the speaker icon on the system tray that is on the bottom right corner of the desktop .. or go to start - all programs - accessories - entertainment-volume control.
once that window is open , click on OPTIONS menu and click on properties. under playback, check that all the options are checked and then click ok. it will open some volume controls, check the mute option under Microphone and uncheck it if it is checked.
Click on OPTIONS menu again and choose "Recording" this time and press ok. follow the same procedure mentioned above to make sure that microphone isn't on mute.
Under Yahoo chat room again, make sure that you dont have ur microphone on mute and Handsfree option is checked there. if still your mic doesnt work, make sure you press on TALK button when you are talking.

hope it helps.
